RALEIGH, (AP) — Senate Republicans have rejected a House version of their bill to clear out dozens of current members of North Carolina regulatory boards and commissions. Now a special committee will meet to attempt to work out differences.

The Senate voted Tuesday not to accept the House changes and named their negotiators to develop a compromise GOP lawmakers in both chambers can accept. The House is expected to appoint negotiators, too.

Both versions of the bill direct all or most members of the Wildlife Resources Commission, Coastal Resources Commission and state lottery commission to step down now or in a few months.

The two chambers disagree over how panels like the Utilities Commission and Industrial Commission should be retooled.

The Senate also wanted to eliminate 12 Special Superior Court judgeships.
