RALEIGH (AP) - Some lawmakers want to give North Carolina private and parochial schools the right for certain employees or school volunteers to carry concealed weapons on school grounds to provide safety.

A Senate bill filed this week would allow a school's governing body or administrative director to give written approval to someone to carry a firearm, tear gas or stun gun if the person has a concealed weapons permit and is trained. Current law makes it illegal in most situations to bring a gun to any school.

The bill also makes it lawful for the permit holder to bring a weapon on a religious school campus to attend religious services.

A House measure filed Thursday is somewhat similar but applies only to private schools in Forsyth County.
